Celebrating 75 years of excellence, the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) traces its roots to the 1940s. Informal summer meetings, affectionately known as "Fish Fries" laid the foundation for a gathering that transcended casual discussions. What began as Montgomery Elevator Company managers and their distributors grew steadily, culminating in 1948 when a group of Montgomery distributors envisioned a cooperative for procurement. By 1950, during their annual meeting, these forward-thinking distributors officially formed the NAEC. Charter members, including Berman-Kern Elevator Company and Wright & Mack, embraced a shared vision. James Bryce assumed the role of the inaugural NAEC President, marking the beginning of a journey that spans seven remarkable decades of collaboration, innovation, and elevating the industry to new heights. Cheers to 75 years of elevating excellence!

Where We’ve Been – Where We’re Going

Since its establishment in 1950, the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) has played a pivotal role in advancing the interests of the elevator, escalator, and accessibility equipment industry. Over the years, NAEC has evolved into the premier industry association in North America, distinguishing itself through a commitment to promoting safe and reliable vertical transportation. The foundation of NAEC's success lies in its dedication to education, networking, and embracing emerging technologies.

At present, NAEC stands as the largest organization of its kind in North America, spearheading volunteer-led initiatives that support the vertical lift industry. Contractors and suppliers find ample opportunity within NAEC, offering a diverse array of programs and educational opportunities. These resources empower NAEC members with a distinct advantage as they navigate local, regional, national, and global markets. The Association's unity initiative, fostering One Voice, One Network, and One Community, is making a tangible impact for independent operators and suppliers worldwide.

Looking ahead, NAEC is positioned as a catalyst for the next generation of leaders in the elevator industry. By setting the stage for skilled, educated, and successful professionals, NAEC is not only ensuring the continued safety and success of the industry but also creating a legacy that extends beyond its inception in 1950. The Association's unwavering commitment to industry excellence and collaborative unity signifies a bright future for NAEC and the vertical lift community it represents.

William C. Sturgeon was a founder of the National Association of Elevator Contractors and served as the association’s executive director for its first two years. He was NAEC president in 1953-1954, which was also the year he started ELEVATOR WORLD magazine, now in its 71st year. In 1961, he was chosen as the elevator industry’s Man of the Year, and in 1995, NAEC created the William C. Sturgeon Distinguished Service Award to be given annually to the member of the industry making the greatest contribution to the well-being of the elevator field. Sturgeon was also a founding member of the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association, the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities and the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation.

Elevator World’s close relationship with NAEC is as strong today as it was 75 years ago.
