NAEC announces the addition of Shannon Bates as National Development Officer and David Smarte as Global Education and Safety Officer
Conyers, GA (March 30, 2021) – The National Association of Elevator Contractors is pleased to announce the new addition of two new staff members: Shannon Bates will be joining the staff as the new National Development Officer, and industry veteran David Smarte will join NAEC in the newly-created position of Global Education and Safety Officer.
Ms. Bates has over 20 years experience in fundraising and non-profit management. She has created long-lasting partnerships and successfully raised millions of dollars for several organizations including The Ronald McDonald House, Union Mission, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, The American Cancer Society and Georgia Southern University Foundation. Her work passions include business strategy, networking, innovation and volunteer and staff management.
A respected leader within the elevator industry, Mr. Smarte has over 40 years of experience assembling and guiding teams in all aspects of elevator related industry. An expert in code compliance of conveyances, he has a passion for leading strategies to enhance workplace safety. He is trained and experienced in ASME, ANSI, OSHA and other state/federal safety regulations, and he has experience in designing and facilitating training sessions on operational safety.
For many years, Mr. Smarte has provided volunteer leadership in several areas for NAEC, including serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the Education and Safety Committee. Mr. Smarte is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious NAEC William C. Sturgeon Award for excellence in the industry.

National Association of Elevator Contractors announces new leadership team
Conyers, GA (November 10, 2020) – The NAEC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the new leadership team for the organization. Association veteran Rená B. Cozart has joined us as our new Executive Director, and long-time NAEC manager Amanda Smith has been promoted to Deputy Director.
Ms. Cozart has served in various management and development roles. Previous roles include the Southeast Region Executive Director for the American Cancer Society and the Division Vice President for the American Diabetes Association, South Region. With over 20 years of experience in board development, stewardship, account management and staff development in both for-profit and not-for profit businesses, Ms. Cozart has received numerous awards and recognition for customer service, team-building, and sales. Ms. Cozart is a native Georgian, raised in Marietta and a graduate of Georgia State University. She is married and has two children.
Amanda Smith has been with NAEC since 2007. She has served as Special Projects and Credentialing Manager and most recently as Director of Education and Finance handling the association's accounting and finances. During her 13 years with the NAEC, she has worked with various committees including the Education & Safety, Certification Board, Finance, A/R, and VTMP. Amanda has an active role with the Elevator Industry Safety Partners (EISP) alliance and OSHA, and she recently led the staff during the staff during the transitions between directors. Ms. Smith is a member of Vistage Worldwide, the Georgia Association of Association Executives (GSAE), and the American Association of Association Executives (ASAE).
NAEC Vice President Hope Evans offered her congratulations, saying, “We are very pleased to have found such a strong and experienced leader in Rená to take the helm of our association, and we know that this executive team that includes our friend and leader Amanda will take our association in great directions!”
